SHELLEY RESIDENCE
Dorado, Puerto Rico
The residence is located in a coconut grove next to the Atlantic Ocean. It also faces the golf course of the Dorado Beach Hotel which is, in effect, a "borrowed garden" setting for the principal orientation of the house.

The form and feeling of the residence derives from two sources. The original farm, owned by the Livingston family, was one of the grand plantations of the Island. The new house recalls the hacienda living style of the turn of the century. Coincidentially in the same era, architect Antonin Nechodoma practiced in the Caribbean following the Prairie School style, leaving a legacy of many elegant homes, some still standing.
The new residence was designed to capture a hint of this time without compromising comfort or design. The plan is cruciform, and upon entering the house, all of the circulation and principal spaces depart from the foyer. The center of the house is an interior terrace, two stories in height, rather than a traditional living room. Its furnishings are informal and tropical. The second floor rooms face the ocean, golf course and mountain views, each unique and characteristic of the setting.
