I wanted to build and was intrigued by the flexibility that concrete, the building material of Puerto Rico, afforded to design as a continuous flow of material without joints. Coming from a temperate climate, the breadth of the tropical scene, with its environment and culture
challenged my sensibilities as an architect. In my first years in practice, residences were laboratories of investigation in working with the sun, rain and breezes. Indeed, before the general use of air conditioning became widespread, designing for comfort was a primary goal. I became very aware of the
notion of place both at the macro as well as micro scale. That exploration of a specific architecture for its context has continued through today, although as lifestyles change, so does
the architecture.
