FUNDESCO
Caguas, Puerto Rico
Fundesco is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping people who are essentially ostracized from society: the homeless, abused women, single mothers, and AIDS patients.

These particular projects are homeless shelters. The buildings will serve as a home for the marginal sector of society until they require medical care, at which time they will be transferred to a hospital. They are located within inner-city neighborhoods in Caguas, Puerto Rico, a city in the interior
of the island. The projects are surrounded by low-income commercial and service urban context, areas populated by the homeless and precisely where this type of shelter is most needed.

The building plans respond to their urban setting. They are pushed to the property limits at the sidewalks, thus helping create interior courtyards acting as a quiet refuge from the intensity of life in the surrounding streets. There will be no air conditioning, therefore the buildings are organized along single-loaded corridors to maximize the cross ventilation of each apartment. The architectural character of the structures is Low Tech, low maintenance, yet with a sense of permanence for a dignified institution within the city.
